Presidents Corner – July 2016
I would like to begin this month’s letter to the membership with a “hats off” to Dallas Heenan, Jim Davis and Clarence Williams for putting together a memorial service for our founder, Woody Baldwin, on June 18th. It was a celebration exactly as Woody wanted it.Folks shared memories, met up with old friends and made new ones, and took away whatever Woody memorabilia they wanted. I think everyone there learned something new about Woody – a man of many facets. Dallas, Jim, Clarence – thanks from all of us for an event well done!
We also hosted four members of the national Prime Timers Board, including the President and Secretary as well as other Prime Timers from San Antonio, Houston and Oklahoma City. We even got our charter – presented to Austin Prime Timers by President Michael Stone. Seems they did a little research and discovered that we had never been officially presented with a charter and took this opportunity to do so. Austin Prime Timers was founded in 1988 but I guess we’re official now guys!
We also heard some good news from Treasurer Charley Tucker at the June General Meeting. Besides being a lot of fun the Anniversary Cruise on May 15 was a financial success. This year’s adopted budget included $600 to subsidize the event but the outstanding ticket sales very nearly covered the entire cost of the event.
This year for the first time the budget also provided for $100 subsidies for four “membership parties” – a way of recognizing new members as well as entertaining prospective members as guests. The hosts for these events are guaranteed a reimbursement of $100 of the expenses they incur and may also request reimbursement of additional expenses up to the amount of entry fees collected at the door. At the June meeting the Board voted to extend this reimbursement to three additional events in order to keep the entry fees as low as possible: the summer pool party; Thanksgiving; and the annual Holiday Party. We have a lot of fun to look forward to in 2016.
Two other big events coming up: PRIDE Festival on August 27 and the AIDS Walk on October 16. Russ Boyd is our chairperson for PRIDE and is still looking for additional guys to help out with our booth. This is an excellent chance for us to let folks know we’re here, having fun and going strong! David Soileau is heading up our AIDS Walk effort and just itching to get started raising money early this year. Remember, Austin Prime Timers was the #1 team last year – let’s do it again! Contact both of these guys to lend them a hand on these two important events for our community.
Well, time to wrap this up for another month – break out those bikinis, boys. It’s Pool Party Time. See you at Jim and John’s on Sunday, July 10th.
